I appreciate James H. Brothers' comments regarding this topic.
In a graduate level class a couple of years back I wrote a paper
discussing the potential for archaeology to examine
work environments in 19th century industrial sites.
Although I don't have the paper or references at hand
right now, I recall that inquiry into 'cultural
ecology' has led some sociological and historical
researchers to look at the advent of 'scientific
management' and other theories with respect to the
relationship between workers and the material
enviromnent of work. Industrial Archaeology is well
placed to take up this line of study.
I look forward to this discussion.
