Job Setting
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, founded in
1881, now serves the graduate students and senior scholars from
148 affiliated colleges and universities as their base for
research and study in the history and monuments of Greek
civilization. The School maintains a Publications Office in the
United States, currently in a building located on the grounds of
the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey,
employing two full-time editors in addition to position
currently advertised; production manager; in-house graphics
designer; typesetter; sales fulfillment. The Office publishes
the quarterly journal Hesperia, containing reports on School
excavations and related articles, and four monographs per year
also relating to School excavations, utilizing Sun Workstation
hardware and TEX software.
Duties
Primarily responsible for editing and production supervision of
four monographs each year, reporting to the Chairman of the
Publications Committee and the Chairman of the Managing
Committee of the ASCSA. Work involves editing, proofreading,
and managing production at all stages; handling correspondence
with authors, reviewers and printers; collecting financial data
from printers and for grant applications; creating and
monitoring budget; cooperating with Editor of Hesperia on
publication of catalogues, flyers, and on book exhibit at annual
AIA/APA meeting; attending meetings of the Publications
Committee twice a year as well as the semi-annual meetings of
the Managing Committee. Required: background in academic book
publishing, advanced degree in classics or classical
archaeology, or an equivalent combination of training and
experience; knowledge of ancient Greek; reading knowledge of at
least two additional European languages, preferably German and
French. Needs to work effectively with scholarly authors.
Desirable: Familiarity with computer typesetting systems.
Available Starting April 1, 1995, pending budget approval.
