Much of privy literature has been considered a little off color.
There is a small book, probably still in print, called The
Specialist, by Chick Sale, a stand-up comedian early in the twentieth
century. It's loaded with insights into the culture surrounding
privies in that era. Humor is always a good measure of current social
feelings.
During the fifties, someone produced a copy at my mother's bridge
club. Her reaction is most interesting to the present discussion. She
said that the city-bred ladies had no idea of the humor. The
country-bred ladies, who had grown up without indoor plumbing, were
in stitches.
My copy has grown legs, but I recall reference to the eight-family three-holer.
