I think we are stressing now one essential point: the "meaning of music".
Through different essentials aspects of music, some perception canals
formal perception, experience of time, cinetic power...), perceived through
cultural conventions (Steve Schwartz emphasized), each listener makes his
personnal inner picture of a piece, his own "meaning" (which can't be fully
described with words).
The "meaning of music" is a thing definitely personnal, the meeting of three
great elements:
- A set of universal psychological parameters contained in music
expression
- Cultural conventions shared by people from a same culture and time
- Personnal experience of perception, psychological background
The composer and the listener may share or not the same cultural
conventions (semiotic codes for instance), which modify perception.
I think we find here a fascinating and essential subject to talk about:
"the meaning of music". Have you read interesting books on the subject?
What is your opinion about it?
