I totally agree. There are more good versions currently available
(Koopman, Suzuki, Leonardt, Herreweghe's previous recording as well,
to name just four) and they all have their ups and downs. Herreweghe's
first is still available over here in Europe at a reduced price. If you
can spare the money, I would certainly go for the second Herreweghe. It
comes with a very nice interactive CDrom by the way giving you a few nice
insights into the work and the performance. Although the Gardiner also has
many strong points, it does not do the same for me as do the above
mentioned.
I promised some time ago to do a "Satzisch" survey of the Mathew Passion as
Don did for the Mass and the Inventions. Unfortunately I had a nasty disk
crash some two weeks ago and have since then struggling with the less than
adequate support of my hardware supplier. Everything's fine now, and the
first part of the survey will be showing up on this list around this
weekend.
