Could be that You spell his surname uncomonly, the more usual spelling is
Giya Kancheli. AFAIK he is alive, and the last time I read something about
him He was living in Berlin, to which he exiled in the eighties (AFAIK).
And yes, his music is intriguing - intriguing with out being modern in any
way (some have called hin a Georgian "Part") as for recordings I belive his
"concerto" for Violia player Juri Bashmet which he calls "mourned by the
wind" liturgy for viola and orchestra is an essential starter (ought to be
out on RCA) - there is also a couple of CD's Kanchelis music on Label ECM,
His symphonies has a most persuasive advocate in conductor and fellow
Georgian Jansung Kakhidze (several spellings), several diffrent recordings
have been circulated in the past, on lables like Olympia, Sony. I've also
seen a disc on CPO, to wich I havent had a chance to listen.
Dave should also search the list archives, Kancheli has been discussed
several times over the 4 years since I logged on MCML.
