My point was that when someone doesn't make a purchase of a new product -
whether they get it for free on-line or second hand - their money doesn't
go to the record company - and in turn - the record company's money doesn't
go to the studios, the ensembles, the composers (if still in copyright),
and all of the ancilliary workers.
There is a possibility that many labels will go the whole way and stop
recording entirely - some are not far from that point already - in that
they spend no more money on recording, and just use the recordings that
they (and we) already have?
How do people currently producing and composing music make a living when
these revenue streams dry up. Okay, labels can pay the performers the
Naxos way with a one-off payment, but it's an expensive business to be a
musician - only ten Naxos discs come out each month to varying degrees of
success.
I would rather pay for a recording and support up-and-coming artists. I
think they would rather receive money from that stream than having to rely
on the charitable funding that supports many ensembles and performers.
