I have Sym. 1-20 and 40-54. They're okay, but overall, for the
lesser-numbered symphonies I prefer the Naxos, and for the
upper-numbered ones I prefer the Dorati, Jochum, Beecham, and Marriner
(all available at bargain prices). There's something about Nimbus'
sound that is quite unappealing -- sort of a pall played over
everything. The same problem appears in the Elgar, Mendelssohn,
English Church Music, and the Spirit of England sets, although it's
less obvious in the Grainger set. Naxos is vulnerable to the same
complaint, but if you steer clear of the few that fall short of the
mark (e.g., by using the Penguin Guide) you'll find a good
representation of the better Naxos symphonies across the board.
