The premiere of Chanticleer's "How Sweet the Sound" tonight was a total
triumph. The all-spiritual/gospel program, complete with the Rev. Yvette
Flunder's passionate preaching throughout the concert, covered the range
from barbershop to the Mormon Tabernacle, from an old-fashioned revival
meeting to riotously funny bits, from a devoted religious service for some
to a deeply musical-spiritual event for others. And, through it all, the
group never sounded better -- and for anyone familiar with Chanticleer,
that ought to mean something significant.
The program will be repeated in Sacramento, Lafayette and Santa Clara next
week, then given again at the SF Calvary Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m.,
Sunday, Aug. 13. Portions of the program may well be part of the
Chanticleer's next national tour that will take them, among others,
to Springfield, MA (10/1), NYC (10/6), Portland, OR (10/15), Hawaii
(11/10-18), NYC again (Metropolitan Museum), 12/3. Do not miss.
