Gunter Wand has performed a phenomenal Bruckner 8 two months ago in
Hamburg. I've seen him live and now that I've heard the broadcast of that
concert several times I like this performance better than any other I've
heard (Guilini, Jochum, Horenstein, Solti, Sinopoli (underrated), Wand
('88) and Tintner).
It's more refined than his '88 Lubeck cathedral performance. I especially
enjoy the warmer atmosphere, colorfulness, and greater transparency. The
timpani in the Scherzo sound now like drums on an antike slave-ship and
Wand's string arrangement in this movement is unique. The Adagio is more
intense than ever. Fortunately, Wand is performing this symphony again
next Sunday in Lubeck to open Schleswig-Holstein's Musikfestival. The
concert is broadcast live at 7 p.m. (German time!) and Europeans should
have no problems recieving the broadcasting stations Arte (live at 7 p.m.)
or ZDF (at 11.30 p.m.).
The websites of the stations are:
http://www.arte.de/
http://www.zdf.de/
http://www.radio3.de/
You will find their Astra-frequencies also at:
http://www.astra.lu/
I hope you find time to listen to this extraordinary performance. It's
also interesting to see how he leaves his age behind himself at the podium.
Wand still conducts without partitures.
BTW, Wand's latest Debussy/Mussorgski disc booklet names a "30 French LP
set" by Wand released many years ago. Does this set contain his recordings
of Messiaen? What's on it? I was surprised to see that alapage.com offers
his recording of Haydn's creation. The label is marked as M10/Ades. Is
that an abbreviation? I'm searching for their website.
Best wishes,
Ralf Oehlmann
