The Garbage Concerto's composer, Jan Jarvlepp, is Canadian. His parents
came from Finland. He lives in Ottawa, where the concerto (for instruments
made of recycled garbage) was premiered a few years ago by the Ottawa
Symphony Orchestra. Ironically, the BIS recording seems to be available
everywhere in the world but Canada, where it is not being released until
about a month from now!
Jarvlepp told me that he can't imagine the concerto being done any better
than in this recording. Having heard his copy, I'm inclined to agree.
He was known in Ottawa for a while as Mr. Postmodern. His recent works
have been pretty strong and, if they can be just as quirky as some of his
earlier work, there seems to be more meet to them. He has another recent
CD out on his own label. It's pretty good. You can get all kinds of
information from his website: http://www.janjarvlepp.com/
