Don Satz asks:
>Are there any other recordings by John Nelson on the market?
The one that readily springs to mind, a propos Handel, is his recording
of Handel's "Semele," DG 435 782-2. It has an all-star cast highlighted
by Kathleen Battle and Marilyn Horne, and like the "Alcina" production uses
a modern-instruments orchestra in a very stylish manner. Perhaps I should
add here that I know both John and Anita Nelson slightly through mutual
friends. They are both distinguished graduates of the institution at which
I teach, Wheaton College in Illinois. John returned a few seasons ago to
conduct the local choral union and the College orchestra in a bracing pair
of performances of Mendelssohn's "Elijah," and in March 2001 will, conduct
the same forces in the Britten "War Requiem," which should prove to be a
very special event, indeed.
