Hello everyone!

I am back online from Salt Lake City, and send my greetings to the list
members.

Quickly on to business. I have some announcements for students, so please
pass this on to students you may know who don't read this list.

Quebec is approaching quickly for the SHA 2000, and the Student Subcommittee
and the Academic and Professional Training Committee have a number of things
planned for this meeting. Each student registrant should have a sheet in
their on-site registration materials that will list all of the details of
activities of particular student interest, including the past-presidents'
student reception and the SHA 2000 Student Forum.

Before the meeting, students should watch HISTARCH and the newsletter. We
will again be trying the roommate matching and rideshare programs this year.
If you want to attend the meeting, but are worried about money or don't
have a roommate-- DON'T DISPAIR! You are not alone. Two subcommittee
members have volunteered to act as coordinators for roommates and
rideshares:

Kimberly E. Monk <[log in to unmask]> Roommates
Adrienne Roberts <[log in to unmask]> Rideshares

Kimberly and Adrienne have agreed to do this, and to allowed me to post
their names to the list. They are as busy as you are, so please be nice if
you don't hear from them right away. In addition, I have given them
instructions that limit their power and potential frustration. They will
attempt to match smoker/non-smoker and male/female preferences and THAT IS
IT. Don't email them to find a driving partner that likes SKA music.
Thanks.

In addition, I would strongly encourage all students to attend the SHA
Awards Banquet on Friday eve. There are several reasons to attend the award
banquet. The presentations are an excellent way to learn about the history
of our field and to start to put faces to the books you are reading. In
addition, this year the SHA will present the new John L. Cotter Award, which
recognizes people in historical archaeology at the start of their careers
(including undergraduate and graduate students). This could be someone you
know! The banquet is one example of how the SHA organization has worked to
be a student-friendly meeting. I spoke with Bob Schuyler, the Chair of the
SHA Awards Committee, and once again, chairs will be set up for those of us
who can not afford the Banquet tickets. (The Banquet starts at 6:00 and the
Awards Ceremony at 8:30 on Friday evening.) If you can afford it, sign up
for the Banquet, if not then come into the room sometime between 8:00 and
8:20 and take a seat.

Thanks for making a note of this material. Please feel free to print this
out, cut and paste into memo form, and distribute to the students in your
respective departments/firms/etc.

Thanks,
Tim

"Oh!" said one, and after him every one else, "I could have easily jumped to
the top of the castle in that way myself." "Yes," said Sir Foulk, "I know
you could, and that every one of you easily can, now after seeing me do so,
and the way I did it."
From step to step to the top of the castle of knowledge.
