The debate about Shostakovich's memoirs _Testimony_ was rekindled towards
the end of last year by the appear of _Shostakovich Reconsidered_, which
systematically examines the arguments for the veracity of _Testimony_.
The debate nonetheless continues. In the hope of answering some of the
questions raised before and during that debate, a press conference has been
organised; you are all cordially invited to attend. The timing is governed
by Vladimir Ashkenazy's very tight schedule; he has nonetheless made his
time available so as to be able to address these issues in public. This
is, I believe, the first time he had shared a platform with Solomon Volkov.
We don't require prior announcement of your intention to attend, though
advance notice would be appreciated nonetheless. On a personal note, I
would be particularly pleased to meet some of the MCMListers I've got to
know through e-mail over the last few years.

on the recently published _Shostakovich Reconsidered_ (Toccata Press).
Maestro Ashkenazy, Solomon Volkov (editor of the Shostakovich memoirs,
_Testimony_), and Dmitry Feofanov and Allan Ho (author-editors of
_Shostakovich Reconsidered_) will be discussing Shostakovich, _Testimony_
and 'the _Testimony_ controversy'; their presentations will be followed
by a question-and-answer session. Date and time: February 15, 1999,
beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Location: The Mannes College of Music, Goldmark Practice Center (37 West
65th Street, 3rd Floor, New York City); this is located across from Lincoln
Center, between Columbus and Central Park West.
This is the first time that Vladimir Ashkenazy and Solomon Volkov have
shared a platform, and one of Solomon Volkov's very rare public appearances
to discuss the writing of _Testimony_; Professor Ho and Dmitry Feofanov
spent six years researching and writing _Shostakovich Reconsidered_. Such a
gathering of Shostakovich expertise is very rare and promises a fascinating
morning's discussion. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
You are welcome to contact Professor Ho and Dmitry Feofanov in advance of
the conference with questions you wish them to answer during the conference.
