There should indeed be attribution and not only when the music's still
under copyright.  A similar problem exists in film credits where you
can read interminable credits for everyone with even the most tenuous
connection with the film but, often, not that the music arranged by the
credited arranger and played by the credited musicians was written by the
uncredited composer.  European films, especially French ones, are much
better at this.

I doubt that the time will come when you'll see, for example: "John
Williams is grateful to Sergei Prokofiev and William Walton, whose
musical ideas he has been quietly lifting for years."

 [Has anyone verified that the Brahms theme was actually used?  I
 don't have the CD right now, but I have listened to it a number of
 times over the past couple of months, and I certainly wasn't struck
 by a similarility of the themes.  -Dave]
