I am currently enjoying the heck out of a recently purchased BMG CD of
Artur Rubinstein playing Liszt. Adjectives such as charm, beguile, dazzle
and scintillating come to mind. AR makes the music breathe comfortably
while still finding plenty of thrills in the right places. This is an
artist who doesn't thrust himself at the listener with aggressive tone and
manner, but draws him in: you learn forward, into the music and playing
rather than being jammed into the back of the seat. They don't make 'em
like that any more.
