I had to look twice at the label: yes, it's EMI Classics. When I saw the
title, I was sure it's Naxos -- offbeat repertory from a regional German
orchestra, manufactured in Holland.
Whoever is putting this out there, hurrah! Zemlinsky's "Saemtliche
Orchesterlieder" includes 17 selections, including several world
premiere recordings. Conlon conducts the Geurzenich-Orchester Koelner
Philharmoniker (an excellent orchestra, which I hear for the first time),
and in addition to a group of "old" favorites -- Violeta Urmana, Andreas
Schmidt and Michael Volle -- the CD introduces (to U.S. audiences, at
least) the remarkable soprano Soile Isokoski, one of the most distinct
new (again, probably to me only) voices in my recent experience.
