Another month presents another batch of interesting new releases:
bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin performed by Benjamin Schmid on
Arte Nova - This issue received an outstanding review in Gramophone, and
given the Arte Nova price, I'll certainly give it a try.
Maher's Das Lied Von Der Erde performed by Maazel/Meier/Heppner - I'm not
a big fan of Maazel's, but the solo vocalists entice me greatly.
Chausson and d'Indy string quartets from the Chilingirian Quartet on
Hyperion - This is an apt coupling since d'Indy completed Chausson's string
quartet after he died unexpectedly, and I'm always a sucker for string
quartets.
Beethoven Violin Concerto & Mozart Clarinet Concerto performed by Michael
Collins (clarinet) and conducted by Pletnev for DG. That's right,
Beethoven's violin concerto on the clarinet. Sounds very interesting,
or at least novel.
Dvorak String Quartets Nos. 6 & 7 and two smaller works from the Panocha
Quartet on Supraphon - This group has provided outstanding previous
releases of Dvorak string chamber works, and I anticipate more of the same.
CPE Bach keyboard works from Carole Cerasi on Metronome - Ms. Cerasi gave
us last year a superb recording of works by Jacquet de la Guerre. I'm very
much looking forward to her interpretations of CPE's highly inventive and
quirky compositions.
Bach organ works from Lagace on Analekta - Lagace was a discovery for me
with his Bach Inventions/Sinfonias recording on harpsichord. This new one
is eagerly anticipated.
Haydn String Quartets Op. 76(4-6) from the Lindsays on ASV. You could
just about bet your life that this recording will be superb.
Blackwood String Quartets from the Pacifica Quartet on Cedille - Not being
familiar with Blackwood, his string quartets sound like a good starting
point for me.
Bartok String Quartets from the Hagen Quartet on DG - I've always enjoyed
the Hagen Quartet; unfortunately, their recent releases have not found
their way to U.S. shores. Maybe this one will be different.
There is an odd new release that I saw in the stores - "Bach in Brazil"
from EMI. Of course, Bach isn't and never was in Brazil. However, he
has been seen in Las Vegas - a perfect match.
