Thanks, Peter for your response.
Exploring the possible avenues a little further, particularly the concept
that the whole may be greater than the sum of its parts,  could it be that
the individual bees may operate as if machines or computers, below the level
of consciousness, yet the colony as a whole, considered as a single multi
celled organism, may fall within a definition of conscious?
