Just wondering how you all feel the term is now being used by 1) the public,
2) by maternal/child professionals in general, and 3) by lactnet users
themselves.
In response, I would agree that there is NO standardization, esp in light of
the Breastfeeding Support Specialist, Peer Counselor program, and states that
mandate a lactation person, but without stipulating credentials, etc. They
are all good ideas, but add to the confusion. I always state that I am a
"Board Certified LC" when introducing, just as I say RN, nationally certified
in Maternal Newborn nursing or Certified childbirth educator. When I use the
term, LC, I am only using it in reference to IBCLC. (But many do otherwise).
As to your hospital, I think they are capitalizing on the marketing ploy of
being able to say that they have xxx lactation consultants!!
Just my own opinion,

Nurse practitioner, CCE, etc.
