HISTARCHers,
The following is a detailed log cabin architecture question (be warned!):
A ridgepole is at the apex of a gabled roof. Purlins may or may not be
associated, perpendicular to the course of gable wall logs, helping to support
the roof rafters.
Two ridgepoles at the apex of the gable, side-by-side, I would call a "double
ridgepole" construction. Purlins, again, are optional.
HOWEVER, what do you call two logs slightly spaced apart (10" - 12"), NOT at the
apex of the gabled wall, but one course of gable logs down from the apex?
Are these called:
(A) "double ridgepole"?
(B) purlins (without a ridgepole)?
(C) something else?
or ...
(D) The question is semantic nonsense; leave us alone.
Best,
Robin Mills
