A few weeks ago, there was a devastating fire in Los Alamos, New Mexico
which is about 80 miles north of Albuquerque. The Temple that my wife
and I belong to sends out a news letter once a month. In the most recent
issue, there was a paragraph from the Temple rabbi asking for donations of
classical piano music for a temple member whose house in Los Alamos was
burned to the ground.
My wife thought that I could easily part with some piano recordings, and I
agreed with her. So, I zoomed into my closet where I have many recordings
that get little playing time. I came out with about 50 cd's of solo piano
and piano chamber music. These recordings were not "duds" and included
items like Mutter's set of the Beethoven violin sonatas. I figured that
the member would very much like the donations.
Yesterday, I called the rabbi and asked him where I should drop off the box
of cd's. He informed me that the temple member only wanted piano sheet
music. I replied that the guy must have also lost all his recordings as
well. The rabbi answered that the member didn't have any recordings to
lose - just his piano and all his sheet music.
So, I ended up putting the cds back in my closet. From my perspective,
that temple member is one odd individual, but it is a shame that his piano
was destroyed.
