Fellow list members: The Shostakovich Tenth is certainly one of the most
significant symphonies of the 20th century. I have close to 30 different
recordings of the work, probably more if I check what I kept on vinyl.

I can heartily recommend the Karajan recordings. The first performance on
DG Galleria is currently not available in the United States and the first
movement in early copies was marred by an editing error which left out 9
bars or so. I read in the Gramophone that DG had corrected this, but the
correction was made just at the time it was being deleted here.

If one buys the 2nd version, be sure to purchase the Karajan Gold edition
because the sound is vastly improved over the original digital issue.
Anyone interested in comparing the two can just play the 2nd movement and
hear how much more "space" there is around the orchestra.

I wish I could hear the Ancerl version; he was a wonderful conductor. I
am very intrigued by the possibility of a Gergiev version. It could be
white-hot.
