My understanding is that Strauss was no Nazi but he had to walk a bit
of a tightrope because he had, as I remember from my reading, Jewish
grandchildren to protect.  He did hold some artistic administrative
position, but did not endear himself to his "masters" and was threatened
with dismissal and worse.  All this is half remembered, and I trust that a
list member will correct my errors.  I am reminded of a striking quote from
Bonhoffer to the effect that these days (the Nazi days) there is no more
gray, but good and evil appear in pure form.  But in retrospect it does
seem that there was gray.
