I was listening last night to Jarrett's ECM disc of Handel Suites for
Keyboard. It's a great recording: elegant and expressive intepretations
that might be a little low in excitement. Since excitement is not what I
expect from Jarrett (be it Handel, Mozart, or Bach), I just revel in his
strengths which are highlighted by a beautiful sense of flow.
Handel's keyboard works led me to thinking about Perahia's Sony disc of
works by Handel and Scarlatti. That one has passed me by so far, and I
was interested in list member comparisons between Perahia and Jarrett in
Handel.
I also don't have Pletnev's 2-cd set of Scarlatti sonatas. What do you
think of Pletnev's Scarlatti in comparison to Perahia's?
If today goes well, I could have both Pletnev and Perahia in my hands
before evening strikes along with Zimerman's Chopin piano concertos. It's
just a short drive to Wherehouse Music which has the three in stock. I
must say that Wherehouse Music has a much better inventory than Blockbuster
Music which was the pits. I keep seeing new recordings at WS that I'm
waiting for from CDNOW. It must be time to rethink buying strategy.
