Two quick observations:

The new mail I am getting has all sorts of cruft at the top, meaning I 
have to scroll down to get to any content.  That means I (and probably 
others) are less likely to read past the subject line.

Having to go to a website to post makes for more steps in the process, 
which will reduce participation.

These both negatively affect usability.  If it wasn't broke... (;^})
