Charlie,

Allan has a popular following among ranchers and, as I said, his results may hold for heavy grazing-adapted ecosystems like some African savannah and perhaps the Great Plains. It does not hold for our less grazing-adapted ecosystems west of the Rockies. His African results are in keeping with findings of ecologists like those of Sam McNaughton whose work on "overcompensation" could explain some of these results.

Cheers!

Stefan

Hi Stefan,
Thank you so much. Any idea how this guy got so much traction? I recently heard him on NPR, and thought wow that's interesting, went from there to the Savory Institute website, from there to TED--which admittedly sealed the deal for me--and to a longer presentation he did at Tufts. By the end of watching the presentations, I was convinced. As soon as I started explaining it to someone, I hit questions about the science that didn't add up, i.e. What about the vast quantities of methane coming directly from the ruminants? And exactly how might grasslands store more carbon than forests?

Too good to be true.
Thanks again,
C
