For reasons of HIPAA and confidentiality milk donation in the US is anonymous and for reasons of nutritional consistency HMBANA requires that we pool multiple donors in one batch. Islam and other traditions that practice milk kinship need to know the donors’ identities, since milk sharing creates kinship relationships that have implications throughout the life span. When this has arisen at our milk bank, I suggest that the family contact their imam or religious leader directly. There are different interpretations of Islamic law, recorded in Fatwahs, some of which allow for use of donor milk. If it is helpful, I am happy to speak with the family and/or with the imam to clarify any information needed about milk banking process. I would also love to learn more about the Islamic laws around this directly from those practicing and adjudicating it.

Subject: Donor tracing in banked milk



I am wondering if any of the HMBANA milk banks are able to do direct donation from one known donor, or do any sort of donor tracing. I have a patient in the NICU who cannot accept pooled banked milk from anonymous donors due to religious reasons.
