I'm not sure about the "peculate" part, but am pondering it.  On somewhat related topics, Jonathan Haidt lays out some partially supported hypotheses about human eusociality that's really very generative and relevant to the communication of scientific evidence and thought in "The Righteous Mind…, well worth a read and heed, perhaps required reading for anyone interested in science education, and well worth some intellectual peculation.
