Hmmm...mist dig pits I've seen either use small scale cleaning & choosing out (these pits often use a glue as a binder) or something large scale and ready to move (such as rubber mulch, or plastic granules). What if you created a pit...or better yet a series of pits that use multiple methods - then the visitors would have to choose the right tools for the various operations. Another approach might be to have visitors solve the story of a dog pit...what happened there...how did the creatures die - by forces, accident or natural causes such as disease or poisoned plants? Ancillary exhibits can couch the question and give examples that might illustrate different similar scenarios.
