I have also found some of the old Exploratorium stuff frustrating for the same reason: surplus components no-longer available. But many cities have folks who specialize in surplus electronics and other types of junk. You can probably find someone with large magnets that can be used in a similar fashion. You will have to find a way to mount them opposing each other and at the right distance to replicate the original exhibit. It might be a bit smaller or larger and look different but still function the sam way.

I have acquired some black sand/magnetite and was trying to replicate an exhibit like the one at the Exploratorium on Black Sand. http://exs.exploratorium.edu/exhibits/black-sand/

Something eye catching, or if anyone knows where to purchase a radar magnet please let me know. If you have any other ideas for a Black Sand exhibit I would love to hear them. Thank you
