Who else is reminded of "A Pail of Air," by Fritz Leiber? About Earth being pulled away from the Sun by a dark star, and the atmosphere freezing, and a family that survives it. Here's a great quote:

"Of course, all the parts of the air didn't freeze and snow down at the same time.

First to drop out was the carbon dioxide-when you're shoveling for water, you have to make sure you don't go too high and get any of that stuff mixed in, for it would put you to sleep, maybe for good, and make the fire go out. Next there's the nitrogen, which doesn't count one way or the other, though it's the biggest part of the blanket. On top of that and easy to get at, which is lucky for us, there's the oxygen that keeps us alive. Pa says we live better than kings ever did, breathing pure oxygen, but we're used to it and don't notice. Finally, at the very top, there's a slick of liquid helium, which is funny stuff. All of these gases in neat separate layers."

Jeff,
I'm not a scientist, but have worked in science ed for a number of years; what concerns me about the statements is that they support the misconception, very common among children and adults, that "air" is a unified thing of its own, not a mix of gases and particles. Instead, this could be an opportunity to dispel those misconceptions by presenting the info about each gas in the context of the larger idea of air.

> 'Air becomes liquid at about minus 190 degrees Celsius.' (for

> nitrogen at -196 C) 'Liquid air looks like water with a bluish tint.' (this confuses me, as I always thought of air as a 'fluid,' unless this is in reference to liquid oxygen or liquid nitrogen) Would anybody print up these statements and put them in their science center or museum? Thanks for any input.
