Hello Fellow Astronomers/Teachers
My name is Javier Rivera and I am the Astronomy Programs Manager at the
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. We - the museum and I - are
very interested in participating in the 2010 ASTC Conference with an
astronomy session and we are looking for other members who may be
interested in our project so we can join forces and come up with
something interesting and exciting. Anna Hurst has already agreed to
participate, representing ASP/AFGU, but we still need more people.
The main theme of our proposal is "Astronomy Programs for Underserved
Audiences". Our idea is to hold a workshop with a few 15-20 minute-long
astronomy-related activities directed to different underserved
audiences; hopefully we will be able to attract these audiences during
the conference.
By restricting the activities to just 15-20 minutes, we will have some
extra time for discussion of each activity.
I, for one, am more than happy to lead a Spanish-spoken activity not
only for a Latino group but also for non-Spanish speakers who will be
exposed to a session where you they won't be able to understand most of
what is going on; their observations, I believe, will be very valuable
to all of us.
The participants of the workshop can become members of the AFGU
community and maintain an ongoing forum discussion after the conference,
in which we can exchange experiences and suggestions about reaching
underserved audiences.
If you are planning to assist and are interested in participating please
contact me or Anna Hurst [log in to unmask] as soon as possible.
