Gee, that's not a nice reaction. : (
It's not blind policy, it's reality. Members like to feel like they are
appreciated. Appreciation to a member comes in the form of recognition.
If you can't recognize that someone's a member of your own or of a
reciprocating institution - and instead you have to hold up everybody trying
to visit while you search around trying to figure out if they are museums
supporters or not, looking disorganized and technically naïve, well you know
- it just doesn't give a great impression. Nor does it inspire confidence
that the visitor will have a great experience.

Again, sorry to say, but if we don't charge at the Gate we can't keep the
doors open for anyone - so it helps to help your volunteers or staff look
and feel knowledgeable and capable, and able to correctly identify visitors.
It's mighty easy to print a name on a card - and really, isn't a blank card
with a barcode kind of unpersonal? Talk about making us all a number - now
we're just a series of laser identified lines.

Just an opinion.

It would appear from reading the mostly negative reactions that
counterfeit cards must be a real problem; otherwise why wouldn't
common sense prevail?

Rebecca, nothing irritates me more than blind policy - although I
don't work for an institution anymore, I'd say, hey, if they are
smart enough to present ANY kind of card and tell me they are
eligible for a discount, give it to them.

My own pet peeve notwithstanding, I applaud your thinking - why not
take it to ASTC and suggest they allow a small, as in 8 point,
imprint of the ASTC logo somewhere on the card/letter/etc.....
