Hi Everyone,
I did get a detailed e-mail from Diane about the requirements for member
cards if they are to participate in the Passport program (read below).
We're just trying to find the least expensive way to do a durable,
scan-able card, but it sounds like ordering a stock of generic ones
without being able to print name and expiration date on them is not
going to meet the needs of other centers. Maybe some of you would like
to chime in on cheap printers for durable, scan-able plastic cards?
Sorry to get folks riled up!

Hi Rebecca,
Currently, ASTC does not have membership card standards for
participating in the Passport Program other than having the ASTC logo on
the card. However, it's a best practice to have an expiration date
included. This helps the 300+ other venues determine whether or not the
Passport visitor's membership is active. Also, Passport sites can add
language to their admission policy/family definition that may get your
members excluded from the free admission benefit. For example--

Immediate family living in one household. Membership expiration date
information is required.

or

Two adults and two children living at the same address, one adult named
on the membership card.

97.2% of 2008 Passport Program survey respondents issue cards with
expiration dates. We also asked: Would it be helpful if ASTC introduced
membership card standards? Of the 102 respondents, 49% said "no" while
22% said "yes." The remaining 29% were undecided. Breaking down the
results by size did not reveal a disparity between large and small
institutions.
****end****

Thanks everyone, talk to you later!

Heyo-
My understanding is that museums that participate in the passport
(reciprocal admission) program should have a small ASTC Logo on their
membership card somewhere and some kind of an expiration date. We train
our
staff/front desk volunteers to look for this when admitting folks. The
lack
of expiration dates presents a huge problem since benefits are for
current
museum members and trust me, when you're at the front desk with a line
out
the door, the last thing you want to do is make a tired mommy with her 2
screaming kids who have just driven 2 hours to get to your museum wait
for
you to make a phone call. My thoughts for you: contact ASTC themselves
and
see if there is an official policy for what needs to be on the cards in
the
passport program. I'm guessing you should contact *Diane Frendak* the
membership director (ASTC Staff correct me if I'm wrong!!) They're great
people down there in DC and I'm sure would love to chat with someone as
they
are snowed into their offices. ;-)

As it snows in Ithaca, I am already imagining Hawaii in October......
