our water area is quite large...there are two long wavy tanks (they're meant to be rivers) with assorted objects built in, like a waterfall with 4 holes you can block off, and and several plexi "jars" that are attached , so you can fill them and dump them so they don't go all over the floor. there are also a number of "toys" floating in it, though you might call them spoons, turkey basters and funnels. between the large room and the wavy design of the tanks, the exhibit actually holds a LOT of people who can all be having fun at the same time. the biggest problem with it is that there is a sand play exhibit not far away, and kids are always carrying sand to the water tanks, and water to the sand tanks. that was probably not our wisest decision. the majority of the exhibit upkeep is actually about the sand. aside from that, I echo what everyone else said about treating the water and general maintenance of a plumbing system. despite all that, it's one of my favorite exhibits we have.

Hi,
At Science Alive we are busy designing our new science centre. We know water play areas for preschoolers are a massive hit with the public but have logistical challenges. I've spoken to a few designers recently who have said given their chance again they would not have a water play area. What say you? Would you do it again? What have you learnt?
Thanks,
Amy
