Science Specialist
National Productions Department - SciGirls

Position Overview

The Science Specialist ensures that the science and pedagogical content of the television series, website, publications, and related outreach activities are accurate and meet tpt programming standards of quality.

Major functions of this position include:

•         Researches episode content and mentors (working scientists or engineers) in collaboration with senior staff and project partners and assesses their appropriateness for the program.
•         Develops and maintains relationships with science educators, scientists, gender equity specialists, advisors, and institutions that review, consult, and provide input to the development of the project.
•         Responsible for accuracy of science content, use of inquiry based learning practices, and implementation of strategies to engage girls in STEM in the program.
•         Oversees episode development at all key points (science outlines, treatments, rough cuts, fine cuts) to ensure science content is accurate, age appropriate, and aligned to current curriculum standards.
•         Researches, develops, writes, tests and edits content for outreach and web materials, including online interactives and activity guides.
•         Manages shared database of contacts and science stories, developing new layouts and reports as needed.
·     Represents SciGirls at conferences, webinars and workshops.

Desired Skills and Abilities

The desired qualities and attributes the Science Specialist will possess to achieve maximum results are:

•         A Bachelor’s degree in science or science education.
•         5+ years experience in formal or informal science education; background with middle school aged students preferred.
•         Experienced research and science educational writing skills.
•         The ability to create effective, high quality relationships with internal and external constituents.
•         Strong analytical and computer application skills.
•         The ability to work independently and motivate self to achieve success.

•         Strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills focused on communicating science to non-scientists.
•         Experience presenting to adult audiences through workshops, conferences, webinars, etc.
•         Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
•         Highly motivated and a self-starter; ability to work independently.
•         Dependable, reliable and conscientious.
