Two comments -
1. We had a billiard table in our science of sports exhibit for 8 years (geometry of trick shots). We had no trouble with injury or damage form the loose pool balls, either. I think 5-7 pounds is a bit much, though.
2. To Ian's point about a thinner fabric - you might try Skyline Displays. They are a tradeshow company that we've used for some stretched-fabric text panels. Sort of a thick lycra or spandex kind of material. They can print a nice grid (or even a star field) on a piece for you to stretch. Holds up pretty good for us so far; we've also used it for the base of some exhibit pieces to give it a curved, organic 'skin' sort of shape. We were worried about intentional or unintentional damage, but no damage in a very heavy-attendance year.
