ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

It's good to have the fun/friendly language on pre-printed out of order
signs, and when there is more information available visitors really
appreciate it. Giving exhibit techs a fill-in-the-blank form to produce
more informative signage is another strategy for two reasons--one, visitors
find the behind-the-scenes stuff interesting, and two, it answers the
question "why isn't there someone working on the problem right now?" The
signs can be 8 1/2 x 11 paper and the language goes something like:
"The extended power outage from a recent storm has caused our video server
to crash. A repair technician will be on-site January 12 and we hope to
have it up and running for you on your next visit."
or
"Being fun can wear you out! The actuator on this robot broke and the
replacement part is on its way."
It's also helpful to have signage in the museum lobby alerting visitors
when any of your really popular exhibits are out of commission. Most people
will pay to come in anyway, and you help repeat visitors manage
expectations for their kids as well as make sure people feel they had a
choice so they don't feel ripped off.
