alcohol-based ink sounds like such a simple solution, but I just called
the company
and they recommend against using these inks for this purpose.

regarding today's discussion...wow, I certainly didn't intend to cause
such a debate with my question. While I agree people's fears about
handstamps is not necessarily rational, I'm sure we've all done things
in our museums because a visitor had a concern about it, or because one
kid managed to injure himself on some supposedly foolproof exhibit
component. It's part of who we are as public destinations.

This problem can be solved very simply by using an alcohol based ink in
your
stamp.  You can share with visitors that the ink is alcohol based and
that
you are basically stamping them with Purell. That way everybody can be
safe
and secure.

Not that any other ink base would likely harbor virus, it is more likely
that your visitors will that know alcohol is used as a disinfectant and
there is no chance of spreading the flu with your stamp.
