There is what teachers need and there is what teachers think they need. These are not the same things.

I developed a week-long outdoor science immersion experience for science-phobic elementary teachers that ran through the 90s and a little beyond called "Recreational Science at Loon Lake." We pretended that we were going to give teachers what they think they need, lots of binders full of blackline masters but then we gave them what they actually need, exposure to real scientists doing real science. So they would go out in the morning with a forensic entomologist and exhume the corpse of a pig or help an engineer with a remotely-operated sub. Then they would work with a "master teacher" to figure out how some of this science could be done as activity-based inquiry in a classroom. In the evening we'd sing songs around the campfire and get drunk. It was awesome.

I think the key is to focus on science process skills, even if teachers think they don't need them because they invariably do.

Has anyone done a teacher needs assessment? I'm trying to go deep and find out what teachers need from my museum and remove as many barriers as possible. Any examples or suggestions would be appreciated.
