I feel compelled to share the story of the best donation box I've ever
seen. It's a low-budget, down and dirty version of the automata-based
donation boxes that Tim Hunkin designs, and it lives at the Machine
Project in LA. It has no sign.
Near the entrance, there is a clear tube hanging down from the
ceiling. It is hooked to a series of tubes along the ceiling, and
eventually, to a hidden shopvac. You can put your hand up to the tube
with a dollar in hand, and it will happily suck it up and across the
room, to a cone in which a dollar tornado delightfully spins, like a
higher-yield coin spinning vortex exhibit.
Here's a picture of the cone with the shopvac off. Note the
proliferation of dollars!
