We use Cheerios as training treats and that works too!
We also have goldfish that play soccer!

We have used rats in our education programs and classes, with a consistent training program (and a person skilled at training) you can have rats program ready in a matter of weeks. It takes a lot of dedication, though, and patience (especially at the beginning.)
We use corn bits and sunflower seeds (oh, and sometimes mealworms...that's a really special day) as reinforcers.

See, at my museum, we mainly think of rats as "python food".
Ahem. But if they're still alive, how long did it take to train the
rodents to do the basketball demo? I've heard 6 months cited (long,
considering that the rats only live ~3 years).
A doity rat,

Actually, they were rats. ;-> It was a fun exhibit and came with a
"stadium" stage and four or five sports-related program scripts, along
with an educator who presented the programs and trained our staff on
them. One of the programs was Rat Basketball. We got permission to
continue Rat Bball after the exhibit left and have featured it off and
on for all the years since we had the exhibit. I'm sure someone from
COSI will be glad to give you more information.
