When in doubt, eliminate the problem.
In UK hospitals they have a hospital radio system that uses speakers that
fit into the electrical trunking behind the beds with a small push on
plastic pipe fitting. These are acoustically linked to headphones by a clear
PVC tube. So the speaker and connections are protected and the headset is
virtually indestructible. There is s stereo version too.
At Cité des Enfants in Paris they use this system for their "Language Globe"
exhibit but with a nice touch, they use red shower handsets as uh, handsets.
