Hi Laura,
I recently went through a similar search for the Lick Observatory (and
in fact similarly quizzed the Listserv before getting started). Our main
goals were aesthetically pleasing custom monitor stands in close
quarters, hi-def slideshows (at 1080p vs 720p or 1080i - something you
might want to educate yourself on), automatic re-start each morning or
after power outages, and ability to swap new presentations in and out
with very little fuss. Ended up contracting out stand
design/installation with Gizmo in San Francisco
(http://www.gizmosf.com), and going with ViewStream 500 players
(http://ecommerce.digitalview.com/digital-signage/media-players/viewstre
am-500.html) and fairly inexpensive 26-inch Asus monitors
(http://www.amazon.com/VK266H-26-Inch-1080P-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B001LY
PITM/ref=dp_return_1?ie=UTF8&n=541966&s=pc). Note - lower cost players
and monitors available if 1080p hi-def not important.
Hope that helps, and best of luck with your project!
