ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I'd like to do a demonstration of breaking a glass with sound. All the
instructions I've found on the web about how to do it involve
equipment (or an operatically trained singer) that I don't have, and
I'm not sure if the equipment is even necessary. For example, the
instructions here
<http://www.physics.ucla.edu/demoweb/demomanual/acoustics/effects_of_sound/breaking_glass_with_sound.html>
say that you need an oscilloscope, a frequency counter, a function
generator, a frequency synthesizer, and a stereo amplifier in addition
to a microphone and a speaker
I would have thought that a computer with waveform visualization and
tone generation software would be enough. Tap the glass, look at the
wave form on the computer and find the peak frequency, and then use
the tone gneration software to produce a tone of that frequency. Aim
the computer speakers at the glass, and turn up the volume.
Can anyone who has done this demonstration tell me what equipment they
think is necessary?
Thanks,
Susan
