Eric,
 
depending on what your trying to do with the projector ( and it is xmas so you should be sharing)...
we've used very simple light sources for a range of projection projects.
 
for a number of convection current type displays and ripple tanks etc we have used var headlight bulbs, ( very cheap compared to overhead ( or LCD) projector lamps, tolerate poor ventilation, and provide a good point source ( and so cast sharp(ish) shadows.  Depending on what your trying to do, this might save some dollars.

Well, it seems to me that an overhead projector is about 500 bucks 
and a video camera + projector is more like $1,500.  Is there an 
advantage to the camera/projector approach?
