It seems to me that it is also important to ask why one would assume
that typical exhibits are somehow not girl-friendly.

A few years back at the Austin Children's Museum we were exploring
similar ideas. I also remember some information suggesting that girls
appreciated real world problems over the abstract. What it suggests is
"problem solving" versus "open-ended" exploration. Or at least an
emphasis on the former. The "social interaction" idea as well suggests
creating activities or exhibits that are interactive in the sense that
they require cooperation or even team efforts. But again that is not
the only way. Drawing from my own experience with my very own teenage
daughter (argh!) she always preferred working on her own. So be careful
of generalizations regarding girls. In fact my daughter NEVER liked
pink.

(actually partnered with OMSI) about technology and human abilities that
is informed by research that suggests that girls are interested in
engineering as it is applied to real world problems, that involve social
interaction, and feature nice shoes and cute smiley faces in pastel
colors (well, not the last..)
