To think / To write / To publish
A rare opportunity to learn creative nonfiction techniques, to work with
science, technology and public policy scholars, to delve into the world of
communicating science, to consult with editors of major magazines and to
publish creative nonfiction.

WHAT IS IT? The Consortium for Science Policy & Outcomes (CSPO) at Arizona
State University is presenting an intensive two-day workshop, followed by
participation in CSPO's conference "The Rightful Place of Science?", for the
"next generation" of writers with an interest in science and technology.
Selected participants will learn creative nonfiction techniques, consult
with editors of major magazines and pair with a "next generation" science
and technology policy scholar. The goal of the workshop is to provide an
opportunity for the scholars and writers to work together to publish their
work in a mainstream magazine or to develop a book or film proposal.

WHEN & WHERE?	May 15 - 19, 2010 (Workshop, May 15 & 16 / Conference, May
16-19, 2010) Tempe Mission Palms in Tempe, Arizona

WHO SHOULD APPLY? Poets, fiction and nonfiction writers, journalists,
documentary filmmakers, bloggers and other writers involved in alternative
media, and museum communicators may apply. Applicants should be at the
beginning stages of their careers, with no more than one published or
accepted book or no more than one film/video accepted at a major festival;
no more than five essays/articles/stories in recognized journals or
magazines in the field of science, technology and public policy; no more
than two years as a reporter for a daily/weekly newspaper, radio or TV
station or network, or a staff position as writer or editor for a magazine,
or news or feature service in a science, technology or policy-oriented beat,
or writing for a museum for such in-house publications as magazines and
catalogues.

HOW DO I APPLY? You must submit: a two-page letter describing your interest
and background in science, technology and public policy, both from an
experiential and academic point of view; and a one-page biographical
statement. The letters will be judged on content, but even more so on style,
clarity and articulation. Writing or other media samples will be considered,
but are not required. Applications are due March 15, and should be submitted
to CSPO by e-mail at [log in to unmask], or by mail to: Next Gen
Communicators/Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes/Arizona State
University/P.O. Box 875603/Tempe, AZ 85287. Successful applicants will be
notified by April 7. Those selected will receive an honorarium and travel
expenses to attend the two-day workshop and three-day conference at the
Mission Palms Hotel, Tempe, Arizona.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN TEMPE? Communicators will arrive at ASU on Friday
evening, May 14. Saturday: The day-long class will be devoted to creative
nonfiction/narrative craft, and led by Lee Gutkind, Distinguished Writer in
Residence at CSPO, author of many narrative nonfiction books and founder of
Creative Nonfiction magazine. It will cover narrative techniques, craft,
structure and research approaches, and will include reading and writing
exercises. Sunday: The day will begin with a breakfast session when Next Gen
Communicators meet 12 Next Gen Science and Technology Policy (STP) Leaders
(attending a separate NSF-funded workshop) and develop a joint presentation
for the editors they will meet. Guest editors will give 20-minute
presentations about their magazines, blogs, networks or publishing
companies, summarizing the work they are seeking to publish and the ways in
which the work should be presented to them. Sample proposals will be
circulated. A question and answer session will follow. Later, there will be
a "pitch-slam" in which the scholar/communicator team presents the essence
of their ideas to the editors. Conference: Next Gen Communicators will
participate in daily roundtable sessions at which their cohort Next Gen STP
Leaders will be presenting their work.
