Exploratorium Targets Interactive Learning with DNA Files III

Now in its third series, Peabody Award-winning "The DNA Files" offers
listeners and Web users an informal education in the genomics revolution and
follow-on research and technology, its scientific underpinnings, and related
social, philosophical and legal issues. Hosted by John Hockenberry and
guided by an outstanding panel of advisors, the documentaries and features
explore the science of genetics and its ethical, social and legal
implications.

In conjunction with the five new episodes of "The DNA Files," the
Exploratorium has created interactive workshops that provide an introduction
to genetics for general audiences. Hands-on activities explore the
fundamentals about DNA and its role in evolutionary change, similarities
between humans and other creatures, and the role of climate change in
genetic processes. The workshops can be used on their own or as an
educational supplement to The DNA Files radio programs.

The workshops are designed for use in informal education environments, such
as museums, after-school programs, and libraries and are suitable for 5th to
7th graders or families, where children as young as 7 can participate.
Workshops can accommodate up to 30 participants and take from 1 to 1 1/2
hours depending on the format used. All materials needed for the workshops,
including detailed teacher guides, activity instructions, graphics, and
source lists of easily available materials, can be downloaded. No prior
knowledge about DNA is required for workshop presenters or participants.

The workshops are available in two formats:

* An introductory course on DNA designed for a group that will work together
over time. The series is divided into four 1 hour workshops: Introduction to
DNA, Evolution, Comparing DNA, and the Genetics of Climate Change.

* Three individual workshops that provide a basic introduction to DNA and a
specialized aspect of genetics. These 1 1/2 hour workshops can be offered on
their own or in combination with other exhibits or programs.

"The DNA Files" workshops were developed by the ExploratoriumR as an
outreach component of The DNA Files public radio documentary series with
funding from National Science Foundation Grant No. ESI 0452611. The "DNA
Files" series is produced by SoundVision Productions and distributed by
National Public Radio, receiving wide acclaim through its broadcasts and
community outreach across the country.
